CD Reviews

Superlative artistry at an amazing price
Santa Fe Listener | Santa Fe, NM USA | 11/01/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"For the cost of a single ful-priced CD, one can buy an array of first-rate artists playing six major concertos. Although EMI calls this 3-CD box "Romatnic Violin Concertos," they have omotted the Brahms and substituted the Prokofiev #2. Leaving that bit of a misnomer aside, this is an amazing bargain. The biggest name, David Oistrakh, isn't represented by his best Beethoven concerto recording by any means, thanks to wiry sound and Cluytens' coarse cndcuting, but the remainder of the roster, Dumay, Znaider, and Zimmermann, are wonderful artists shown here at their peak.

Since amazon doesn't list the contents of the set, here it is:

David Oistrakh / Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Francaise / Andre Cluytens - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D op.61 (Beethoven). Nikolaj Znaider / London Philharmonic / Lawrence Foster - Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor op.26 (Bruch). Augustin Dumay / Emil Tchakarov - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E minor op.64 (Mendelssohn). Augustin Dumay / London Symphony Orchestra / Emil Tchakarov - Violin Concerto in D major op.35 (Tchaikovsky). Frank Peter Zimmermann / Philharmonia Orchestra / Mariss Jansons - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D minor op.47 (Sibelius). Frank Peter Zimmermann / Philharmonia Orchestra / Mariss Jansons - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No.2 in G minor op.63 (Prokofiev).
