A great bargain anthology of Tchaikovsky, with some lesser h

"This collection of Eugene Ormandy/Philadelphia Orchestra recordings from the 1950s and 60s is a great bargain anthology of Tchaikovsky, with some lesser heard pieces. My three favorites on this disc are "None but the lonely heart," (song arrangement/transcription by Thomas Frost), "Andante Cantabile from String Quartet No. 1", and "June (Barcarolle) from THE SEASONS," an orchestral transcription of a piano piece. The other works may be heard more often: Waltzes from "Swan Lake" and "Sleeping Beauty" and the love theme from "Romeo and Juliet," heard here in a truncated version. Why couldn't the producers of this disc include Ormandy's entire recording of "Romeo and Juliet"? - it certainly would have fit. The "Andante Cantabile", II from Symphony No. 5 in E minor, is from Ormandy's complete stereo recording of Symphony 5 for Columbia, made in 1959. There is also the Waltz from "Serenade for Strings in C Major" which has had a moderate number of recordings, but not as many as the symphonies.

The sound is very good: a little hiss in a few places, but barely noticeable, and the high strings sound wonderful, even on my modest stereo system. The Philadelphia sound 40-50 years ago was something unique and special, especially if you love the rich, full sound of an orchestra, as I do. All the tracks transfered well to CD.

I would buy this just for the three rarer pieces mentioned above which have not had that many recordings. Ormandy's Tchaikovsky is very fine, noble, and beautiful. Highly recommended, especially at such a bargain price."
