"I knew the name Ron Carter and liked alot of the albums on Prestige so I decided to buy this. Bang! I was out [$$] dollars and up one of the greatest jazz albums I have ever owned. This album contains Mr. Carter with the unique sound of his Piccolo bass backed by half of the band soon to be called Sphere(named in tribute to Thelonious Sphere Monk).The atmosphere this album lets out can actually transport you away from your body if you let it. It wont happen the first time. The first time through it will be like meeting a potential girlfriend that you want to get to know but not sure how. After like the second metting you are more comfortable with the unique sound of the Piccolo bass and you are on your way. To think this came from one session is unthinkable. I think this will be around for awhile but I would pick this up without hesitation had I heard it before i bought.

One Fine Jazz Album... Almost Complete

"I waited years for this album to appear in CD rather than suffer my worn-out, now dusty vinyl. My tip for those who are intimately familiar with the vinyl, or noticed the tiny printed disclaimer in the CD liner notes, you'll realize that one track from the original date made it to the vinyl, but couldn't fit on a single CD--"Blue Monk". No worries! Mr. Carter no doubt chose this track to leave out since this is the only track from this date that was previously released elsewhere. Pick up "Standard Bearers" as well, and now you'll have the complete set, albeit on two CD's."

"Having worn out my LP's of this great gig, I was delighted when this was released on CD (and it might not be around too long-get it while you can!). There's some interesting stuff here, especially the unique tones Carter pulls out of his piccolo bass. For the record, another reviewer suggested Carter was playing a cello; however, the liner notes state that this is a piccolo bass, an instrument created to Carter's specs. In the photo, it looks like its' size is between a cello and bass - and it sounds like it. Great tunes, excellent playing by all Kenny Barron, Buster Williams and Ben Riley). Carter leans heavily into his rubber-like funky licks - a real treat for the ears."
