Synopsis

If you've bought or listened to any jazz record since the mid-1950s, you've heard the legendary bassist Ron Carter on any number of them. He's played everything from hard-bop to Brazilian music, and on this CD he delves into Latin jazz. Backed by pianist Stephen Scott, percussionist Steve Kroon, and Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason, Carter's deep bass tones move from U.S. swing to Afro-Latin tumbao patterns with ease. His renditions of "Besame Mucho" and Ray Bryant's Cubop classic "Cubano Chant" move and groove. Carter changes the syncopated citizenship of Antonio Carlos Jobim's bossa nova "Corcovado" to a Cuban bolero, and his blues "Loose Change" is a hip-swinging tune that would be at home in the ballroom and the bodega. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"wow! An amazing latin-jazz record. It's on the mellow bossa side of things but the guys on this record can really play. Ron carter "leads" with logical brilliance and beauty. Stephen scott's piano phrasing is perfect. Not too busy, but very rhythmic. Harvey mason has a very interesting style. He lays back when necessary, but has a very original style. Steve kroons adds percussive colors that enhance the rhythm section. If youm like this, get "the bass and i." This is my second favorite latin jazz record only to roy haynes trio w/danilo perez and john patitucci. Buy that one, trust me."
