A rare example of re-recordings bettering the originals

"Like Roy Orbison, whose voice did not deteriorate over time, Ronnie Milsap's 1996 re-recordings of his 70s and 80s greatest hits is a quality release, presenting a singer still at his peak. For a performer with 40 country number one singles, Milsap is still relatively unappreciated. Yet his voice is among the greatest in music: capable of a variety of styles, with a tremendous vocal range. The recording of It Was Almost Like A Song on this CD is awesome in its thundering, almost-operatic finale. On a lighter note, Snap Your Fingers is an example of Milsap's playfulness - a supremely confident performance that is pure fun (listen to the final line he includes, not sung in the original hit version, as Milsap sings "look out old Milsap is back" in a great Mack The Knife take-off). While a new studio album of original material is awaited, a CD re-issue of his 1976 live in concert album is long overdue."
