CD ReviewsTakes me back!!! 05/13/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "Ah, the days of seeing Roogalator at the Hope and Anchor and especially the Nashville. These were two of London's best "pub" rock gigs and I confess I followed this band around. I think I saw them 16 times if memory serves me right. So take anything I say as a clouded by golden memories of that period. Suffice to Say (gosh, just remembered the Yachts too) this album is wonderful to have. Sock it to your pocket as soon as you can. Whatever did happen to Danny Adler? Strange he was from Ohio living in London. 25 years later i'm a londoner living in Ohio." Early funk-rock classics 10/31/2000 (4 out of 5 stars) "Roogalator often get classified as part of the mid-70s English pub-rock movement. That's certainly accurate insofar as it describes their time and place, but can be quite misleading with regard to their sound. Led by American ex-pat David Abrams, Roogalator was really a funk-rock band, with noticable jazz and country influences. In the mid-70s Roogalator was the subject of a great deal of hype in the English music press. They were one of the hottest bands on the pub circuit; the major record labels were showing a great deal of interest. And the critics were raving about how they were going to be the next big thing, and drawing comparisons between Abrams and Jimi Hendrix, another American who moved to England to get himself noticed. But for whatever reason, they never got the big contract, and Abrams, who could easily have been a major guitar hero (his playing is very sophisticated and jazzy, the way he plays country-ish pedal steel style bends over funk grooves still sounds fresh 25 years later) lapsed into obscurity. This collection brings together material from a variety of recording sessions, from '75 to '77. The songs are consistently strong, with catchy funk grooves, clever lyrics, and brilliant guitar work." Spelt Which Way??!!? leeleedee | Lexington, KentuckyCincinnati | 09/04/2002 (3 out of 5 stars) "God help me, I live in Cincinnati, Ohio, one of the most...interesting...lively...ahh, places, ah, in the nation. Not much goin' on here...The Stiff box contains the original version of what they spell as "Cincinatti Fatback." Great song. Reviews below say that the version here ain't the same one as appears on the box.
Question: is this the correct spelling of the song title, or is the Stiff box correct. In other words, is it right to spell it wrong or right to spell it right? Get me?Wonder if anyone has lobbied for this tune to be the official city song?" |
