Anyone who thinks that old-time rhythm and blues is dead obviously hasn't heard Shelton; this singer is a blues shouter in the classic sense. Shelton's background includes some respectable recordings for such legendary labels as Excello and Simms. Recently returning from retirement, Roscoe has proven himself to be as good as ever both as a singer and a songwriter. The self-penned title cut and "Save Me" have all the emotional lift of gospel numbers despite their secular subject matter, while other sides like "Lady" and "All Night Long" are pure good-time tunes. Shelton is backed by a band that includes noteworthy keyboardists Phil Rugh and Jay Spell, drummer Bill Swartz, and the Third Coast Horns. Considering the quality of this disc, let's hope Shelton has given up the idea of retirement for good! --Lars Gandil
