"Early American Vocal Music is a specialty of mine and you will hard pressed to find better ensemble singing with such flare and nuance as The Western Wind Ensemble. The original 1973 record album was entitled "New England Anthems and Southern Folk Hymns", but was changed to "I am the Rose of Sharon" which is William Billing's famous ode from The Song of Solomon, track 6. Each track is interpreted in the true spirit of "shaped note" singing, but is done with true professionalism, which is most often not the case IMO.I make special mention of track 18,"Springhill" because I believe that this is THE defining rendition of this Anonymous folk song.I have heard this oft done, but never with the vocal and instrumental zest that has made The Western Wind Ensemble so famous. This album was my introduction into the world of American early music over 25 years ago and it has still remained the standard by which I have judged every other group that has come along since. This is an essential for early American music devotees.

"I have followed this ensemble and this music from LP to cassette, and now to CD. I am so happy to have found it again. Gorgeous sound and wonderful early American music. This is Euro-American-Appalachian soul music. Enjoy!"
