CD ReviewsRoy goes international. Matt | wv | 06/28/2003 (3 out of 5 stars) "As a huge roy fan for several yrs now, i have bought each and every album he has put out to date. This one is not one of his better ones and by the looks of it ole' Roy might be coming to the end of the line. Its not that he isnt still the best prankster out there, I guess its just that he has done it all and is running out of ideas. The first 7 albums were mostly pranks on phil and brents friends....then the friends of their friends. Then he progressed on to "yankees" ( city people), which i thought was one of the best in its own way. On this one the title is somewhat decieving. You het the idea it is all foriegn calls but in actuality there is only about 5 calls to other countries: france, italy, spain, and amsterdam and scotland. The rest are his usual local calls here in the states. It turns out his typical redneck calls to people here in the states are the funniest calls. The foreign calls just are not that funny considering most of the people cant even understand him very well. Thats not to say they are all bad...there are some really funny moments when he purposely says places and things wrong and asks for outrageous requests: as in asking to rent out the Rome Colouseum for his tractor pull and asking to ride his own bull on the bull run in Spain. As I said, the domestic calls are the best here....there are a few real standouts. Swamp thing, Broken Bed are very funny and paint job is the best on the CD. I guess what bothers me is that this CD has little 30 second intros before each call. it just seems like they were using them as filler and are really unessessary. There is one of his little skit Fishin Reports(which I hate) and an answering machine skit at the end which is funny but I just dont like his skits. All in all, Roy doesnt change his style and that doesnt bother me at all. Ya never can get sick of his style and voice. Just his voice alone makes ya crack up. If your a fan of Roy then i recommend this Cd. If you have not heard him yet then i advise starting from the beginning and progressing to this one. This one wont hook ya like his earlier ones would..." Roy D is back...and better than ever! steviedeee | charleston, wvCharleston, WV United States | 08/07/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "With this album, Roy D. Mercer flexes his sizable comedic muscle and heads into new territory. This theme based album (built around stories and calls related to Roy's travels) contains calls to the U.S and overseas (the call to a "coffeeshop" in Amsterdam is one of my favorites) and there are some nice added extras (like the fishing report and the "message" you can put on your answering machine.) There's even a "Roy D. Rap" at the end...not really a rap, more of a "rant" over a funky bluegrass track.Roy's been doing the calls for so long, it's great to see him take some chances! Some calls are funnier than others, but overall, this is an album you definitely want to have in your Mercer collection!" His humor and creativity have both gone south on this one. D. COLLIER | Brownwood, TX United States | 07/15/2004 (1 out of 5 stars) "I really enjoyed the first several Roy D Mercers I ever heard. Among them are the classic phone calls he made to Herb the Ford salesman, Jack the cemetery worker, International Tours of Bixby (where you can take a tour of anywhere in the world except Bixby), the Navy recruiter (who couldn't stop laughing about Raymond's "squooshed" hamster, Liberace), and many others. They were hilarious, and you could listen to them in mixed company without being embarrassed about anything. But "Hits the Road" is totally different. On his older stuff the worst thing you might come across would be a few PG words here and there and maybe a very subdued and very subtle innuendo. Unfortunately, "Hits the Road" has proven that Phil and Brent are running out of good, clean ideas for humor and now have to trash it up a little. Now if this is the kind of humor you enjoy, then more power to ya; it's a free country. My only point is that this is not how Roy D Mercer started out, and it is certainly not what made him big. I would very much like to see Phil and Brent either get back to their roots or just call it quits."
