CD Reviews

A fantastic set of interpretations

"An historical recording of the Liszt First Concerto is found here: a teen-age Andre Watts tosses off this Romantic concerto with the flair and confidence of a veteran.Gary Graffman's recording of the Rhapsody is appropriately soulful yet attentive. The whole thing works marvelously, but I will focus on some particulars: the 16th and 17th variations are deliciously and dark ominous, while the 18th variation shines brilliantly as intense emotion is applied to a gorgeous melody. The suspense starts up again in the 19th variation and hardly lets up through several more jaw-dropping variations until Graffman's piano ends in a solo whisper.Leonard Bernstein plays the dual role of conductor and pianist capably through the fireworks and melody of Ravel's jazzy Concerto in G."
