CD ReviewsGotta See 'em Live 08/02/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "Happy Birthday, Sabo is a desert island kind of record for me, up there with Axis, Bold as Love and all the others I couldn't live without. Fortunately, or unfortunately, their live performances eclipse the record ~ not an easy task. Living in New Orleans, I have ample opportunity to see them play in large and small venues, yet they still surprise and amaze me. While versions of Like a Virgin and King Tut (remember Steve Martin?) have become mainstays in their set lists, I was regaled for the first time last week with a rousing rendition of the Van Halen classic, Hot For Teacher. If it sounds hard to believe, that's because it is. Their second album, as Alex has said "will be out some time in the next 40 years" and that being the case, any fan in search of their new material will have to check them out when they come to your town. With a minimum of tour support they're sometimes hard to find, but worth the time and effort. They've got more than a full albums worth of new material, just as brain-bashingly sublime as one could expect from these angel faced hellions. And as long as you're at the show, buy Alex, Andy and Carlo a beer. Oh, and request the "egplant song". You'll be amazed... promise." THE BEATLES WERE GREAT, FINGERBOWL ARE BETTER!!!!!!!!! 11/16/1998 (5 out of 5 stars) "Enough about all these comparisons with Tom Waites/Randy Newman/LeadBelly and all that other crap! These guys are great, refreshing, YES refreshing and the STRUCTURE of their composition is excellent. In a world of brain-dead "music appreciation" Alex McMurray is so far ahead of his time he is standing behind himself!Thank you, and YES I bought the album and I will buy the next one.Sincerely, Danny Baker"
