CD Reviews

Best oasis album not to feature any of them

"Just when you didn't think this music couldn't be played any other way. This album is a work of genius, and one that Noel also loves. He has a copy of it. So if it's good enough for him, go and buy it. "Supersonic" never sounded so good."
Best thing since the Beatles

"From the opening bar to the final flourish, this is an epic CD. Reminiscent of side B of Abbey Road, the Philharmonic do justice to the work of the best Tribute Band of the Beatles in the UK."
Why do I love this album so???

"Well, because it's just such an unexpected treat. Why does it work? Bombast. It's sort of like Charles Ives, just actually bearable to listen to. These songs, great as rock songs, work just as well as pieces of classical instrumentation. If ever there was a doubt about "Champagne Supernova"'s musical worth, I would refer the critic to the Royal Philharmonic's playing of said tune for re-evaluation. Everything works (with the possible exception of "Up In The Sky") - "Wonderwall" is positively lovely, "Don't Look Back in Anger" appropriately wistful, "Supersonic" punchily itself and then some!! In many ways, this album (or even the thought of making this album) could be considered the minute things all went wrong; a bit Spinal Tap, if you will (this came out right before the release of the bloated but classic "Be Here Now"). Anyone looking to savage Oasis' ambitions could easily use the very concept of this album to unfairly trash the band. Even the faithful among us can face it: Oasis were never bigger than the Beatles, or even God as Noel Gallagher once claimed. They just happened to write the greatest pop music of the past decade - and it just so happens that this album bears out the fact that it's not just Liam's sneer that makes the music endure - it's the fact that these are amazingly good songs that can stand up to an oboe."
