Synopsis

Tatiana Nikolayeva, who died suddenly on a concert tour of the U.S. in 1994, was one of Russia's greatest pianists. The most immediately striking of these recordings is her imaginative transcription of Peter and the Wolf, which is a virtuoso showpiece and a lot of fun. She does just as well clarifying the scary and sometimes confusing Sonata No. 8, a performance in the same league as those by Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels. Her Schumann playing is warm and expansive. Fortunately, some of Nikolayeva's Bach, Shostakovich, and Beethoven are currently available, but we could use a whole lot more; she made many great recordings. --Leslie Gerber

Frustration
J. H. Walsh | Nahant, MA USA | 12/12/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I just heard Nikolaeva's transcription of Peter and the Wolf. The Hermione Gingold narration is my four year old granddaughter's favorite piece of music and we are "forced" to listen to it whenever she in in the car. It is a pleasant and funny piece, but how many times can you listen to it? Answer...many, many. And then, there it was, on WGBH radio Boston, this incredibly delicious "interpretation" of Peter for the piano by Nikolaeve. I rushed to find it on Amazon to no avail. If this is reissued I hope to be the first in any neighborhood to have one."
