"Strauss enthusiasts who are exploring this series will see many desirable items on the program here. "Unter Donner und Blitz" is one of Johann Strauss Jnr's best polkas, and "Frisch in's Feld!" one of his best marches. "Spleen" too is a remarkable polka mazurka, set in the minor mode for most of its five minute length. The waltz "Illustrationen" might arouse high expectations. It dates from 1869, one of Strauss's best creative years. As performed here, however, it makes no special impression. Indeed, all the performances here, whether of known or unfamiliar works, lack sparkle. Having listened to this conductor's work in this Johann Strauss Jnr Edition, and in a complete recording of "Die Fledermaus", I reckon his suitability in this medium is questionable. To those who want to hear every composition of Johann Strauss Jnr, this issue introduces many unfamiliar works. For me, however, the listening experience has been the equivalent of drinking champagne that has gone flat."
