"Exploring the complete dance music of Johann Strauss Jnr is one of the great delights that modern technology has brought us. Listening to Vol. 31 in this Marco Polo series allows us to hear waltzes from both ends of Strauss's creative life, from the charming "Gambrinustanze" from the 1850s to one called "Hochzeitreigen" which dates from the 1890s when Strauss was trying out new ideas and formulas for creating his waltzes. While the sound is always superb and the progam notes always scholarly in this series, there is sometimes a hint of workaday routine in the performances. You will hear much more alluring performances of "Wiener Bonbons" elsewhere, for example, but many of the other items found here are not available in any other recorded performances."
