CD Reviews

A sure thing for Pogues fans
G. Moses | Men...Of...The...Sea! | 04/29/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This CD was a fun surprise; it just came out of nowhere, but I'm really digging it. Lots of bands are compared to the Pogues, but it really slaps you in the face here--the singer even sounds awfully similar to Shane MacGowan. The music's just like you would expect from the comparison: loud, energetic celtic, with a strong punk aesthetic. Best tracks: "Black and Tans," with a great shoutalong chorus; "Mineshaft," which sounds like the best thing Calexico never recorded; and the best version of "The Leaving of Liverpool" I've heard. Hell, even "Whiskey in the Jar," in spite of being the most over-recorded song ever, comes across well here. The three instrumentals are also rocking. It's true that a lot of the other tracks don't really stand out on their own, but the energy is strong enough to carry them in any case."
