CD ReviewsMagick is Alive and Well !!!!! Robert Burns | Tallahassee, Florida United States | 09/26/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "Composer Kurt Weill once said that "there are only two kinds of music, good music and bad music". Actually Sally Doherty's works fall into a third category called "incredibly gorgeous music"!You may already be familiar with Sally's beautiful voice (and flute playing) from her work with such groups as Sieben, Sol Invictus and L'orchestre Noir. The only problem with recordings by those artists is that you end up with several tracks that don't feature Ms. Doherty's amazing voice, as she shares vocal duties with other singers. On this, her fourth solo release (2nd to feature the talents of her fabulous backing ensemble the Sumacs)there are fifteen great new original songs that feature this beautiful, unique voice as well as one instrumental "In Spring" and a spine tingling, perfect version of "Wicker Man" which you might recognize from the brilliant early seventies suspense film of the same name. Sally Doherty's breathtakingly original music does not sound like anything else you have ever heard (I'm willing to bet).Though at times you may notice slight similarities to artists such as Nick Drake,Sandy Denny,The Incredible String Band and Dead Can Dance. As She seems to share some of the same influences that made the music of those artists so magickal. If you enjoy said artists or if you just love great music in general,Sally Doherty & The Sumacs "On The Outside" (along with all her other albums) is a crucial "must have"."
