"I remember seeing this one in the music shop. Couldn't believe it - there it was: Salome De Bahia - Cabaret. Without any hesitation I picked up this commanding singer's cd which had eluded me for so long, knowing that if I put it off it would be gone. Who is Salome De Bahia? A legendary singer who's known for putting on a fantastic live show and who just so happens to have an incredibly powerful voice! She really hit my radar when I heard the remake to Orlandivo's classic "Onde Ando Meu Amor". That was remade back in 1995 or so when she did some work with a group out of France called "Reminiscence Quartet" in the album "Psycodelico". And that... along with the follow-up album that simply had a few more tracks titled "More Psycodelico", will forever be one of the staples in the nu-brazil movement. She's also tied into the scene with Bossa Tres... Jazz and her "Outro Lugar" is perhaps the theme of that series.



This, Cabaret, is an album that has some of her works from all over, including "Outro Lugar" but minus "Onde Ando Meu Amor". It starts out with the familiar prelude that will hopefully strike a memory for you from the Bossa Tres days before going into the clubby beat to her rendition of "Outro Lugar". "Amor E ALegria" is a cut that'll remind you of a winding road in Bahia, and "Que Reste-T-Il De Nos Amours" will have you dancing with that beautiful latin lady that winked at you. Well... me at least. "A Cidade Magica" is a fantastic slow track that highlights how sometimes Salome can tone down the power in her voice to give a far more romantic vibe. Starting out with the flute and gentle beat, it is yet another track for dancing with the lady of your life while overlooking the city lights. These are just a few of the tracks that I enjoyed; "Tormento De Amor" and "Viejo Cabaret" are also very good.



This CD comes highly recommended! Be forewarned, it's not like the electronic brazil tracks or nu-Brazil cuts that have been so dominant lately. This one is a throwback to some of Salome's performances which often include 30-40 member bands! It also has a very intimate and mature feeling but boy do I love it! It was released on the Yellow Records, which also issued the Bossa Tres... Jazz series along with several other fantastic albums. If you dig this check out the 1999 Bossa Tres... Jazz double disc set (black cover) and DEFINITELY get your hands on Reminiscence Quartet's "More Psycodelico". She actually released a second album in the summer of 2005 too althoug hI don't rate it quote as highly as this one. Finally if you can read French, you can check out a few more write-ups on her shows in the French media."
