Hailed by the international media, Chuanyun Li is one of the foremost violinists of his generation, both from China and internationally. An active member of the Yip's Children's Arts Centre since 1986, he studied under the sponsorship of entrepreneur Choi Kin Chung with Professor Yaoil Lin from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He has won numerous prizes, including First Prize in the 5th Wieniawski International Youth Violin Competition at age eleven. Chuanyun Li has studied with Dorothy DeLay, Itzhak Perlman, and Hyo Kang at the Juilliard School of Music, continued studies at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and worked with Joey Corpus in New York. Li has toured extensively in China, Japan, and the US, collaborating with such orchestras as the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev, the Detroit Symphony with Neemi JÃ¤rvi, the Hong Kong Philharmonic with Edo De Waart, and many more.

"One need not ask `is this another Lang Lang'?

The answer is a definite `No'. Chubby Chuan Yun is lively and immensely talented, but does not have the same type of stage presence as Lang Lang or Yundi LI, or Sarah Chang.

Young Li Chuan Yun, now 30 years of age, is a young violinist who emigrated with his musician parents from Beijing to Hong Kong in 1986, and has since studied the instrument with eminent teachers like Perlman and others. He has won numerous competitions, and obtained the highest scholarship to study at the Julliard Conservatory.

Since his early child prodigy days, this violinist has proved again and again with his diabolic technique and intense musicality that he is in every respect the rightful successor of great violinists like Heifetz and Oistrakh. He can play on a US$200 violin and make it sound like a famous antique instrument by master constructors.

What is most important, Li Chuan Yun is not a musician who requires any `packaging'. If you wonder why major labels have not signed up Chuan Yun, it is solely because he is nothing particular to offer in terms of looks.

However, once on stage, this performer captures his audiences like a huge piece of magnet, some thing wholly commensurate with his physical statute and size. Technique, for him, has become entirely a piece of cake, in any piece whatsoever.

His ability to sing on his instrument is utterly amazing. Just listen to the variations on `Nel cor non mi sento', to savour a bit of his diabolical technique, and "it ain't necessarily so' from Poggy and Bess on his wide-spectrum musicality, and La ronde des Lutins on his youthful exuberance, Raymonda for his lyricism, et al.

This disc is in fact a brief showcase of Chuan Yun's mutli-faceted musical talent.

Major works recordings from this terrific young violinist is most eagerly anticipated.
