Synopsis

Album Description
During most of Samuel Barber's life, his conservative, tonal, essentially 19th-century orientation was considered an anachronism, not only by critics but also by fellow composers. By the 1970s, however, American musical style had begun to change and Barber's music now seemed prescient in its foreshadowing of neo-Romanticism. Two-time Grammy Award winner John Browning had a close relationship with Samuel Barber, and Barber wrote his piano concerto for Browning.

CD Reviews

A memorable tribute!
Hiram Gomez Pardo | Valencia, Venezuela | 03/14/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"John Browning was part of the selected dozen of the cream of the North American pianism of the XX Century. The rest of the team was composed by William Kapell, Rosalyn Tureck, Earl Wild, Raymond Lewenthal, Leon Fleisher, John Browning, Byron Janis, Gary Graffman, Oscar Levant, Andre Watts, Lorin Hollander, and Leonard Pennario.

This album confirms why his devoted entusiam for Barber's piano music became him the voice of Barber, like the case of Tureck- Bach, Debussy-Gieseking, Alkan-Lewenthal, Schumann-Nat, Busoni-Petri, or Rubinstein-Chopin,just to name six renowned associations.

A real acosutic gem in Barber's first centennial of his birth. Don't miss it."
