It all comes together for Eddie Marshall on this one

"Drummer Eddie Marshall's one of those huge talents--Cyndi Blackman, Wallace Roney, and Jon Faddis come to mind as well--who seldom seem able to find the proper music context in which to adequately display their prodigious chops. Coming out of a musical sensibility that informs another fine out-of-print recording, Erkiology by Steve Erquiaga (long the guitarist for Andy Narell's band and most recently a purveyor of interesting classical-jazz hybrids), this record provides that context.Breezy, sophisticated, catchy, Latin-tinged West Coast jazz--but definitely NOT jazz lite--is the order of the day here. Not suprising since all of these fine musicians--Robb Fisher (bass), Paul Nagel (piano), George Cotsirilos (guitar), and Wayne de Silva and Mike McMullen (tenor sax)--have extensive resumes with top-notch leaders of such music. "El Torreon," with its beautiful melody, sinuous doubling of sax and guitar lines, and killer piano outro, stands out in a field of gorgious originals, all by the bandmembers. It's a shame that this disc isn't more widely known. I'd put it in the category of unheard classics."
