CD Reviews

Excellent of Kind for an extinct genre of beauty
L. S. Slaughter | Chapel Hill, NC | 06/23/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Goregous, jazzy instrumentation with sentimental-cinematic spoken word voice over is a near-extinct genre in our coarse, tone-deaf culture, but it had a brilliant moment in this 1970 release by the graveled voice poet and composer Rod McKuen and the gifted arranger Anita Kerr.

I love its late 60s feel, the "sandpipers" type back up male voices, the languid trumpets, silky strings... just a great album. Anyone out there still capable of tender sentiment without guilt of fear of feeling unhip will probably love it. A close cousin to the score of Lelouch's "Un Homme et une Femme (A Man and a Woman)".

Highlights: McKuen's "Love Hasn't Any Windows" and the very-very Sandpipers' sounding title cut, "For Lovers".

Lives up to it's name!
M. Gittrich | Peoria, IL United States | 05/02/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"We bought this album in the 70s when it was new and played in until it was so scratched we couldn't play it any more. Oh yes, it's schmaltzy but I love poetry and Rod McKuen's husky voice with that wonderful violin music--oh my. It lived up to it's name--for us anyway."
