Enjoyable Scarlatti
M. Levitt - classical music buff | Philadelphia, PA | 03/26/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"A highly enjoyable CD of the Scarlatti sonatas that alternates pieces effectively in different keys, major and minor, and of differing lengths.

Perhaps Tomsic could have used more dynamic contrast and shading. Some other reviewers find her unemotional. To me, her playing is crystal clear and elegant if somewhat understated, letting the music speak for itself. If I have any complaints, they are "only 13 sonatas," no liner notes and no Kirkpatrick numbers (Longo numbers only). A CD of the Scarlatti sonatas that I expect to return to for pleasure, to go with those I have by Horowitz and Pletnev.

What A Gem!
John M. Cook | Astoria, NY United States | 12/31/2005

"I was searching through the budget rack at my neighborhood record store when I came upon this CD of Tomsic's Scarlatti selling for $2.99. It's a steal at ten times the price. What strikes you in these performances, apart from the superb technique and immaculate articulation, is how intensely lyrical these renderings are. Many fine pianists have recorded these works, but with Tomsic you get this sense of inner repose that you don't hear with the others. Even in those sonatas requiring a lot of fingerwork (the opening D minor comes to mind) there's an incredible sense of spaciousness, the music never becoming tight and forced. In the more slowly paced sonatas, such as the F minor L.383, Tomsic always keeps a sense of line, she always holds your attention.

It's unfortunate Tomsic hasn't had a bigger career in this country, because this is absolutely superb playing."
Scarlatti playing at the higest level

"Although I own several recordings of Scarlatti on harpsichord and piano, I keep coming back to this disk for total enjoyment. Tomsic is a remarkable pianist who shines in Scarlatti with her infallible technique, wit and nuance. She ranks with Tipo, Horowitz, Meyer and others."
