This latest release is one of the widest ranging yet in this series, spanning the history of theatrical music from Monteverdi to Schoenberg.
We move into the 20th century for a veritable landmark recording. Arnold Schoenberg died in 1951 without completing his only full-length opera, Moses und Aron. Three years later, North German Radio mounted the work's first performance in Hamburg. The conductor was Hans Rosbaud, an authoritative interpreter of contemporary works. This historic performance, initially preserved on a commercial recording issued in 1957, is released for the first time on CD in Sony Classical's new batch of ten opera reissues.
