CD Reviews

An elegant Trout and a young Jeno Jando
R. Broadhead | Southwestern USA | 01/08/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD contains performances of Schubert's Trout piano quintet and his Rondo in A major D438 played by the Colorado Quartet and associated musicians. As a bonus, we get Schubert's Impromptu No. 3 in B flat major D 935 played by a young Jeno Jando on the piano. The Trout quintet is an excellent performance played with energy and elan, yet with a delicate balance. The players are in perfect sync with each other and keep this music moving along with a light rhythm. I prefer this Trout to some I have heard by more well known groups on major recording labels. The less-often played Rondo in A Major for violin and string quartet is played with equal elegance and grace. For the impromptu, a young Jeno Jando plays the piano with his usual flowing clear technique and is a delight to hear. In addition, the sound quality of this digital recording is superb with clear sound, good tonal textures and well-balanced miking. This recording is a real treat and certainly a fine effort by LaserLight. Five stars all around for music selection, performance, and sound quality."
SCHUBERT: PIANO QUINTET IN A "TROUT", RONDO, IMPROMPTU (LASE
prospero72 | Cox's Creek, Kentucky | 10/15/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"REVIEW: Schubert's "'TROUT' QUINTET" is a buoyant work (and one of my all-time favorite classical pieces) that ranges from the supple groove of the opening "Allegro Vivace" and the sweetly paced "Andante" to the pounding "Scherzo (Presto)" and the rousing, stately themes of the "Finale". In between the listener gets to revel in the exquisite melodicism of the composer's own variations (the "Andante: Terma Con Variazioni") based upon his song "The Trout". This is glorious stuff that is never stuffy or pompous: only beautiful and engaging. Ditto the effervescent, fourteen-plus-minutes of the "Rondo"; and the more austere triumph of the "Impromptu". The intricacies of the score demands a flowing technical ease that can be arduous for any but the most expert of musicians, and The Colorado String Quartet (with featured pianists Danielle Dechenne and Jeno Jando) deserve the highest praise for their work here. Given the Laserlight label's penchant for cheap, hit-or-miss recordings: this particular version of the "TROUT" is an absolute knock-out that could very well be the crowning jewel in the company's catalog. HARSH LANGUAGE: none. VIOLENCE: none. SEXUAL REFERENCES: none. DRUG REFERENCES: none.
