Miracle!

I had avoided this Schubert recording by Horowitz expecting these gems of piano music likely to be ruined by his ego-centric playing. But I was wrong. Horowitz plays each Impromptu with reverence and comtemplative sensitivity. For example, he plays E-flat major Impromptu slower than usual to reveal the inner beauty of the music. The best loved G-flat major is played like a miracle and spell-binding. Choice of tempo is perfect. Very spontaneous without unnecessary sentimentalization, yet deeply touching. Horowitz captures the fragile beauty and the bright sort of sadness of the music better than any other pianists including Perahia, Brendel, Uchida, Rubinstein, Richter. I can not imagine this piece could be played with more sincerity and rapt beauty.

Beethoven sonata no.28 suffers from lack of architecture but not without moments of astonishing tonal beauty. Pathetique Sonata, on the other hand, is a revelation. The intense contrast between tonal delicacy and sheer energy of his playing makes it utterly compelling and breath taking to listen to."
