CD Reviews

Quite a mixed bag!
Jan Ole Papra | 07/11/2000
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Strange movies have strange scores, and the french production "Pola X" is no exception! Being rather unfamiliar with the work of Scott Walker, this soundtrack struck me with grand surprise, for it employs such a vast variety of styles. The album kicks off with a dark rock-vocal snippet that is followed by two beautifully orchestrated tracks, with the melodic 'Light' being the best cut one this CD. The next track, 'The Darkest Forrest', is also orchestral, but has a sad and suspensful quality. From here, the album-as well as the actual movie-segues into an insane strangeness with the soundeffect/hip-hop driven track 'Never Again', oriental sourcemusic with arabic lyrics and two tracks with asian karaoke-songs. The e-guitar driven track 'Church of the apostles' is very likely to appeal to any fan of the "Nine Inch Nails"-instrumentals. The two songs included on this album, 'Extra Blues' and 'Blink', both vary in style and therefor do perfectly fit on this CD. Besides being so stylistically inconsistent-a fact that makes this score interesting-the listening experience of "Pola X" gets spoiled due to the inclusion of original (french) dialogue galore before and sometimes in between of almost every track! Overall, this is a very thrilling CD with something in it for everybody. I recomend this album to everybody with an open mind and flexible taste in music."
