Synopsis

Screamin' Jay Hawkins is best known for leaping out of a coffin to begin his '50s stage show and for "I Put a Spell on You," an R&B plaint transformed into an excessive masterwork by (it's said) a case of wine that appeared at the session. This definitive collection of Hawkins's work for the OKeh label includes the unedited version of "Spell" along with other one-of-a-kind effusions such as "Little Demon," "Yellow Coat," and his attacks on the likes of "You Made Me Love You," "Temptation," and "Take Me Back to My Boots and Saddle." Truly an artist who stands for something. --Rickey Wright

Invite that freak over and get nasty
Bachelier | Ile de France | 10/17/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Where did Lux Interior's singing style come from? Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Where did shock rock theatrics come from? Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Where did the stripped down let-it-rip Dionysian production values of Jim Dickinson come from? Screamin Jay Hawkins.

Yet, who was an inconsistent recording artist? Same answer. I prefer "Cow Fingers and Mosquito Pie" over "VooDoo Jive" The best of..." but either album will do if you only own one Sreamin Jay record. Yes, the classic "I put a spell on you" is here, and for a hilarious contrast play it back to back with Brian Ferry's version. But this album also offers "Frenzy" "Little Demon" and "Alligator Wine." Invite over that crazy tang, light the votive candles, get out the MD 20/20, and put this record on for some freaky circus action."
