CD Reviews
Seahorses - 'Do It Yourself' (Geffen)

"Apparently, this was their only album.Guitarist John Squire used to be a member of the Stone Roses.'Do It Yourself' was produced by Tony Visconti(Bowie,Thin Lizzy,T.Rex).That's ironic because the CD does employ somewhat of a '70's sound to it.I would describe the Seahorses as 'advanced serious pop'.I remember seeing their semi-outstanding video for "Love Is The Law".Other tunes I liked here on the CD release were "I Want You To Know","Round The Universe" and "Standing On Your Head".If you dig,say vintage Bad Company, you should like this disc."
A good, soild album

"As I'm sure anyone reading these reviews knows, the Seahorses (an anagram for He Hates Roses) was the band John Squire, guitarist extrodinaire from the Stone Roses started after the Roses broke up. While this isn't near anything the Roses did, it is still a solid, enjoyable album. The rest of the band is very good, too, in my opinion. The singer has a good voice that fits the music, the bass player and drummer are both very good (I am surprised to read the reviews slagging off the rhythm section!) and Squire is Squire. While there aren't as many guitar solos from him as I'd like, his guitar work is still awesome. The best songs are I Want You To Know, 1999, Standing On Your Head, and the jaw-dropping Love is the Law. A really good album...if you're a fan of the Stone Roses or just good British guitar rock in general, check this out."
Not a bad album

"The Seahorses never made here in the US in a big way, but that doesn't mean that this CD doesn't deserve a listen.
I would best describe it as brit rock with a bit of classic rock influence, laced with some humourous lyrics. My favorite being: "There's no such thing as a second chance, look at Auntie George and Uncle Mabel."
Chris Helme provides solid vocals and John Squire's guitar is tight, and put together their songs are bouncy and mostly feel-good, although some are quite long.
My preferred songs: I Want You To Know, Blinded By The Sun, Love Is The Law, Love Me And Leave Me.
Ok, so they don't sound like The Stone Roses, but I don't think they are trying to. Give this CD a go if you like middle of the road rock with jamming, long songs."
This is NOT Stone Roses

"The first half of this disk is phenominal. They are reminicent of Revolver era Beatles and Blind Mellon. The guitar play is very vintage rock with a modern twist, and obviously well recorded. Vocals are Brit pop-rockish and very on point. Many of the tunes on here have very catchy hooks, namely tracks 2 and 5. I for one love the sound of The Seahorses and sadly did not know that this is their only release before reading some of the other reviews on this page. Fans of The Beatles, Oasis, and Blind Mellon would love this release by The Seahorses and I would highly recommend this ablum to anyone with a similar taste in music.
That said, I would like to discourage any fan of The Stone Roses to have any expectations for this albumn to be anything like a Stone Roses offering. This band in my opinion sounds NOTHING like the Stone Roses, and such a comparisson to be made simply because this band features the same guitarist is unwarranted at best. To compare this band to any other simply because a member used to be in both is not really a good basis for argument. It would be like comparing Nirvana with The Foo Fighters simply because Dave Grohl was the drummer in one and is the singer song-writter in another... they sound nothing alike. Same goes here, I love both The Stone Roses AND The Seahorses, but I wouldn't compare the two in any way... simply because this band is NOT The Stone Roses.
At any rate, I view this record as a gem as I was unaware of it's release way back when and have just recently had the pleasure of enjoying it. This band made some very solid music and they deserve to be judged on their own merit. I for one appreciate this offering and I'm sure many others will feel the same. Pick this one up today!"
