"I'll keep this short and to the point. This is a great disc for two reasons. 1. The performances. They are great. 2. The music. I'm a huge fan of Prokofiev, and while this isn't an essential work it's certainly worth owning. I'd never heard anything by Miaskovsky before this, but i can tell you that this concerto is one of the most starkly beautiful things i have ever heard. If you're a fan of either composer, Russian music in general or 'cello music pick this disc up."

"... is the word for this superb disc. It is extremly well performed and easy outcores other availible versions. This is Pletnev and his orchestra at their best (and thats not always the case but on this they are GREAT). Maisky know this pieces well (Rostropvich was his techer and R was a good friend of Prokofiev). This is Maisky at his best and this is one of my favourite classical albums becuase of -of course- Prokofievs MUSIC, sound is very very good balanced, warm and clear, booklet is nice and sleeve art is perfect.Miakovsky (Prokofievs long time friend) concerto is also something special but it is not so modern in style.. more a kind of mixed bag of late romanticm and modernism and very good. This is something extra and buy it before it goes out of print."

"Of the two the Prokofiev comes off better. Maisky's cello sounds thinner than on other recordings and, while this does not detract too much from a technically adroit performance of the Prokofiev, it is not helpful to the Miaskovsky concerto which requires a fuller bodied, more romantic sound to do it full justice. A not completely successful CD."
Great performance of an extraordinary piece

"Music doesn't get any better than Prokofiev's "Sinfonia Concertante" and the Miaskovsky "Cello Concerto." Maisky's performance is flawless and peerless. His equally gifted conductor, great pianist Mikhail Pletnev, brings all the drama, lycricism and rhythmic drive you could want from these Russian masterpieces. Engineering is impeccable."
