Synopsis
Product Description Shalini is a guitarist and bass player who is crazy about 60s, 70s and 80s pop music. She established her band Vinyl Devotion in San Francisco in 1990 and gained experience playing to city crowds, while writing songs and making records for independent, like-minded labels. After a move to North Carolina, she expanded her musical horizons by filling in gaps in her rock education and meeting more seasoned, professional musicians, which boosted her own level of playing. The move opened new doors: to enjoy more stability, travel regionally, and play more outdoor shows to larger, varied audiences. With Shalini's third full-length CD, The Surface and the Shine, the theme is more cosmic and mature, but the songs retain the thread of fun that runs through Shalini's previous material. The four-piece live band (which includes Shalini's husband Mitch Easter) is preparing for fall shows in the Midwest and Southeast. |
CD ReviewsSparkle and Shimmer Robert M. West | Starkville, MS | 10/15/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "A title like _The Surface and the Shine_ suggests high polish, and this record sure delivers that. The style varies from punk to bluesy rock-and-roll to midtempo pop, but every song offers sharp band performances, terrific vocal harmonies, and a clear mix that shows off a superb arrangement. Guitarist/bassist Shalini and multi-instrumentalist Mitch Easter have perfected their musical partnership: this album consistently rings with an authority not always present on _We Want Jelly Donuts_ and _Metal Corner_, good as they are. Especially noteworthy here is Shalini's singing, which ranges from her familiar ethereal soprano to a newly rich and commanding alto. With contributions by drummer Eric Marshall, backup vocalist Jane Francis, and bassist Paul Chastain, _The Surface and the Shine_ is definitely Shalini's best record yet.
