Synopsis

A 28-year-old newcomer from Kentucky, Shannon Lawson promises more than he delivers on his debut recording. Produced by Mark Wright (Lee Ann Womack , Brooks & Dunn, Trisha Yearwood), Chase the Sun is a showcase for Lawson's big, powerful voice, which calls to mind that of former New Grass Revival vocalist John Cowan. Lawson got his start playing bluegrass in an eclectic Louisville bar band called the Galoots, and several songs on Chase the Sun, including the driving "Bad Bad Bad," feature traditional bluegrass instruments: mandolin, banjo, Dobro, and fiddle. But the overall sound is Nashville Slick, with a paint-by-numbers overproduction style that is sadly endemic these days on Music Row. The single "Goodbye on a Bad Day," about a romance gone bad, is the most glaring example--it's a power ballad cluttered with too many layers of strings, drums, and distorted electric guitars. Lawson wrote or cowrote 10 of the album's 11 songs, but the best one is the only cover, a soul-meets-bluegrass take on Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," which features a cool Hammond organ and a blistering mandolin solo. A few more like it would have made Chase the Sun stand out from the pack. --David Hill

CD Reviews

Consistently awesome!

"The best thing about this CD for me is that no one song stands out--each is fantastic and original, musically and lyrically, and represents a wide range of styles and sounds. My favorites: This Old Heart, Dream Your Way to Me, Who's Your Daddy, Slow Down Sunrise, and of course, Let's Get It On! This is one talented rising star..."

"Shannon Lawson has got to be the most coolest country singer out today. This CD is a must have for any collection. One night I was watching GAC and my friend was out of the room. When "Goodbye on a bad day" came on just his looks alone caused me to not change the channel. When he gets to the middle of the song he totally takes you by surprise and belts out his amazing voice! By this point I was looking for a pen to write who sang it and the title and i ended up writing it on my hand! I was yelling for my friend to come in and when she did she fell in love with it also. Right after that I found his web site and checked him out. I signed up for his newsletter (which I never ever do) Needless to say when i got the album i was simply knocked of my feet. Like i said before this cd is just a must have! Maybe you should listen to the fans and not amazon's review. Obviously it's not them who's buying his cd!"

"Shannon Lawson's album is everything that you would want in a country artist he talks about real feeling in his music and stuff that happens in real life. There is so much emotion put into his songs one of my favorite songs is "This Old Heart". This is a great CD with it's 11 tracks I think it can make it to the top 20 billboard charts it is great and it is the best debut album I have heard in a long time. He has a great powerful voice that any one would really like. The other day I told someone about Shannon having "Let's Get It On" on his album and they said "Well that is not really a country song is it?" and I replyed to that with "He can pull off any thing, he has the vocals like no other." Anyone who buys the cd will definitely love it, it's awesome, and the bonus track is GREAT!! He is DEFINTELY here to STAY!!!!
That is my opinion on him and i think he is GREAT and has a a great amazing different voice! If you have the chance to see him at a show near you go see him he is great and sounds alot better live and he will blow you away!!!"
