"That's the best description I can come up with to describe Shawn Phillips. All of his material remains of a philosophic bent when just about everyone else who was into that has since conformed to the pop ethos. He sings about leaving a lover who's into head games. He sings about picking up on signs that his lover wants to leave him but is afraid to give him the bad news. He sings about the death of an infant daughter from the father's point of view--grieving over her himself, yet trying to comfort his wife as best he can. That's to name a few--and all this backed up by his own accoustic guitar...and instrumental backing that is consistently interesting without pulling the listener's attention from the song itself. To call him a "singer-songwriter"--well, a lot of folks look back on the singer-songwriter era with scorn. They just never knew about Shawn Phillips, that's all. And to answer another customer's question, he's still in business, with his own website even!"
Excellent compilation for fans hungry for something on CD

"This is a great "best of" CD. Shawn fans have been waiting for years to get his stuff on CD, and now besides this one and Second Contribution, his other A&M albums are now available on CD from Wounded Bird Records. Check out his homepage at shawnphillips.com for the poop. This artist is probably one of the best and most underrated singers from the 70's and he's still going strong, playing clubs from Quebec to Florida and his home state of Texas."
A good album but not the best of Shawn Phillips

"I'm finding no mention of the fantastic FACES album in all these critiques and unfortunately difficult to find in CD format. Better hear it if you don't want to miss Shawn at his best (one of the few vinyl albums I bought twice due to wearing the first one out). Heard him in the mid 70's at a south Louisiana campus. Glad to hear he's still around in concert. Will try his website"
Not all his best, awesome just the same!

"Since I found this CD before some of his others were released, I had to live with it. Still I am glad this is part of my collection! This CD contains many great titles, but not all. To put all "the best of" would require a large box set. Since finding Contribution, Second Contribution, Colaberation, Furthermore, Bright White, Do you Wonder, Trancsedence (all purchased) available makes me wonder where FACES and SPACED are. And maybe Rumplelstiltskin's Resolve are. OK Wounded Bird Records lets make them available! I have the vinyl and now the 7 CD's, need to find the other 3. I saw Shawn Phillips several times during the seventies in Detroit at the Ford Auditorium. The concerts were some of the best I have ever been to! Would like to see Shawn Come to the Mid Midwest. Had an opportunity to speak with once, (briefly),face to face. He came off as a bit of a conceited dork but what the heck his music is some of the best in the universe! Enjoy all of the Shawn Phillips CD's."
Almost great

"Shawn Phillips is one of the great underappreciated singer-songwriters of the "singer-songwriter era." He's still making music, and hasn't really strayed from his roots. Here's my complaint: FACES, probably his greatest older album, in my searches, has never been transferred to CD. It's strange, especially considering there are at least a couple of tracks here from that record, including the great "Hey Miss Lonely." Also, sixteen songs cannot nearly cover the range of somber, whimsical, and lyrical numbers Phillips has put out over the years, and a larger "best of" voulume is perhaps necessary. Anyway, a valuable pick-up, especially if you like some music you can sing along with."
