Album Description Saxophonist Shelley Carrol displays effortless mastery of his horn on this disc of some of his favorite pieces. Supported by the equally strong rhythm section of drummer Sebastian Whittaker, pianist Bernard Wright, and bassist Curtis Lundy, Carrol manages to leave his big Texas Tenor mark on every track. This CD proves to be a delightful transition from his earlier work on Justice and Leaning House Records. A Distant Star has Shelley poised and ready to take the step to major jazz label exposure. CD ReviewsBig Texas Tenor 05/30/2002 (4 out of 5 stars) "What a breath of fresh jazz. Carrol swings so naturally and his rhythm section shows how its done. Pianist Bernard Wright has played with so many greats and his solos and comping really say a lot on Freedom Sound and Jinrikisha. I have not heard an indie release with the smoothness and flair of this CD in a long time. The late Joe Henderson would be proud of his tunes' treatment. Curtis Lundy is a NYC vet and his big bass sound seems to flow so well with drummer Sebastian Whittaker. The tune "As I Go" is a great original and I only wish this group had recorded more of their own compositions. Maybe next time. This CD is a great one you don't want to sleep on. Peace." "Heart and Soul" Jazz Saxophone GingerRoot | Paris, France | 12/29/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "Warning - because Shelley Carrol's saxophone will melt you. Shelley's playing is full of human qualities - it speaks, sings, cries, whispers and screams. You'll be surprised to discover jazz music can be this much about heart and soul. If you live in Dallas/Ft. Worth area, I strongly recmmend catching Shelley at live shows. It's quite an experience!"
