CD Reviews

For real Sibelius fans only
Steven Apergis | Burke, VA USA | 11/21/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This an excellant CD that David Hurwitz of Classics Today gave a "10 Artistic, 10 Sound Quality" review.

This set, however, is only for real Sibelius fans. There are 6 CD's in the set. Only one contains established works written after he developed his unique, mature style. The rest of the set contains mostly student works that exist only in manuscript and a few unpublished late works.

Many of the works are untitled fragments which do not even have tempo markings in the original manuscripts. One oddity is called [33 Small Pieces]. These are a collection of themes that Siblius composed between 1888-1889. The length of these items range from 10 seconds to 1 minute and 8 seconds.

Some the selections were uncompleted and realized by other composers. For example, the [Allegro] in d minor for piano trio was completed by Kalevi Aho. (Note: the brackets indicate that the original manuscript was untitled and had no tempo markings.)

Listening to these works shows the listener what Sibilius sounded like before he sounded like Sibelius. Interesting but...
