CD ReviewsMay we all find something in this The Anonymous Eponymous | San Diego, CA | 11/15/2009 (4 out of 5 stars) "I didn't know who these guys were when I saw them open for MGMT a while back, but they ended up stealing the show. However, the live atmosphere can really change a band, so I gave this album a listen to round out my opinion. In short, this stuff is solid.
There is a lot of variety on this album, and there are no blatantly obvious skip-it tracks. "The Devil Wears Sunshine" could have been a Gin Blossoms tune, while "Aisleways" invokes In Rainbows on the verse, and "Devil Got My Woman" reminds me of some of Moby's work with samples from the 40s and 50s, but with a tambourine backbeat. There's a bright quality to the guitars on a lot of tracks, both clean and heavily distorted, that reminds me of the insanely-happy-sounding Japanese band The Pillows. The opening riffs of "No Secrets" and "Someday" are perfect examples. I find "Take the Money Out" to be the weakest offering, being a little repetitive in the chorus and not as dynamic as some of the other tracks. The closing track, "Lost at Sea," is not the most inspired acoustic ballad either. However, the shortcomings of these two are more than made up for by the wide variety of good stuff on this disc. Give it a shot!" |
