Silversun Picksup Right Where Smashing Pumpkins Left Off
Cory T. Shaeffer | Pittsburgh | 08/23/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Needless to say, the Silversun Pickups like the Smashing Pumpkins. A lot.

Fortunately, they chose one of the best and most creative bands in recent alternative rock history to emulate, and although the tracks on this album don't vary as much in terms of their sound, they are all very well written and have a great vibe, melody, and big blocks of swirling guitar.

Standout tracks include "There's Noe Secrets This Year," "Panic Switch," "Substitution," and "Grounded." There are no bad tracks on here, either, and it is one of those albums that you can listen to straight through. If you are a fan of 90's alternative with a more modern spin, this is the perfect band for you. The songs are instantly catchy and the melodies are beautiful and haunting. They will stick with you for days. I would rate this five stars if not for it's startling similarity to the Pumpkins' "Siamese Dream" album. For typical fans of power-pop with alternative and emo leanings, this may sound 100% original and out of the ordinary. But if you are (or were) a huge fan of the Pumpkins, then in some form or another, you've heard most of these songs before."
So close to really great -- get rid of the vocalist

"Such a great sound instrumentally but what the heck is up the singer? He never sounds right -- there's a off-putting tonality that sounds like he is trying to grimace and sing at the same time. If he sang at a somewhat lower register and with less studio vocal processing, it would help every single one of these otherwise excellent tracks. Sorry but lose the singer and they've got a grade A band."
