"The original version of the opera is kind of interesting but the singers and maestro Matheson are not very good. Josella Ligi is the only one OK. Bonuses are 25 min. with Cappuccilli (La Scala, 1976). Other labels released this version of "Simon Boccanegra" but Ponto cd is the only one with a decent price. Anyway the definitive revised "Simon Boccanegra" is much better!

Ce disque fait partie de la série d'opéras de Verdi que Matheson a enregistrée en respectant la version originale (ici, celle de 1857, enregistrée en 1975). Les différences sont importantes avec la version révisée de «Simon Boccanegra» (1881) et ce dès les premières notes. Le chef est égal à lui-même et les chanteurs font leur travail, ce qui est une constante de ces concerts de la BBC. Bruscantini et Turp, en fin de carrière, ne sont cependant pas au mieux de leur forme. Josella Ligi est la bonne surprise et la seule vraie raison d'achat de cet enregistrement au-delà de l'intérêt musicologique ; en effet, ce dernier ne dure pas longtemps car finalement Verdi a eu raison de réviser sa partition. À la fin du deuxième cd, il y a 25 minutes de bonus avec Piero Cappuccilli, le chef étant Claudio Abbado. Il s'agit d'un enregistrement fait en public à Milan en 1976, avec plus ou moins la même équipe que le très bon enregistrement Deutsche Grammophon contemporain (mais Freni y est remplacée par Kabaivanska).



Il existe deux autres versions de ces bandes de la BBC. Le triple vinyl d'origine paru chez Voce y rajoutait des extraits de 1961 (la version de Salzbourg avec Gobbi et Gencer plutôt décevants). Il faut par ailleurs absolument éviter la réédition faite par Opéra Rara, sans bonus et au prix extravagant habituel chez eux."

"This BBC concert of the 1857 Version of "Simon Boccanegra" is on a much lower level of achievement than the magnificent concert performance of the orginal version of "Don Carlos". Still, the original "Boccanegra" is a must-hear for any lover of that opera. It demonstrates just how brilliant Verdi was at revising and editing his own earlier work. Alas, this recording is handicapped with dim dry accoustic and the absence of libretto. Even the synopsis provided is of the 1881 version instead of the performance you are hearing. Still, bonus tracks of Abbado's 1976 La Scala performance add to plus side of this equation. I would however recommend getting the Dynamic recording of "Simon" in the 1857 version conducted by Renato Palumbo. It has better sound AND a libretto."
