But relatively few people outside of South America are aware that the song was actually composed by a Venezuelan septuagenarian named Simón Díaz. In his original version, the tune was known as Caballo Viejo (The Old Horse) and told the rueful tale, in florid equine metaphors, of an older man who falls in love with a much younger "filly." But such trivia aside, what really matters is that this absurdly overdue USA debut showcases a multi-talented cultural figurehead who is a master at his craft. Adored by aficionados around the world, Díaz has indefatigably championed the lilting tonadas of his native llanos (plains) for more than 50 years. He has attracted an impressive roster of international interpreters but they'd be hard put to equal Díaz's still-youthful voice and proudly patriotic yet unassuming presence.
