I was generally ambivalent about Eckstine, finding him a bit more pop and less blues than is my taste. But on these, his last recordings, I find his seasoned, quivering voice to be textured and alluring. Authenticity and feeling have supplanted performance (much like the last Billie Holiday recordings, but without the audible evidence of imminent collapse). The two duets with Helen Merrill are touching. Of the many recordings of My Funny Valentine, the dark one here may be my favorite. The invaluable Benny Carter needs no review. If you enjoy vocals for their emotional poignancy this might appeal to you. It is tender and genuine. I like it a lot."
