CD Reviews

Fantastic Re-Master to a classic
Frank Rini | Maryland | 03/12/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Own the original and this remaster is decent, not as good sounding as the other Sinister remasters. This is clearer and crisper sounding. The original was pretty loud sounding to begin with, so this remaster is maybe a tad louder than the original. You get the bastard saints ep as well and that sounds better too. Plus you get 4 live songs all taken from the afterburner album-they sound vicious! Hate saw the band developing longer songs and putting a little more mid level crunch to them. Stillplenty of speedy/blasting, though."
Relevant death metal to this day...

"Sinister's first 3 albums ("Cross the Styx," "Diabolical Summoning" and "Hate") are absolutely essential for death metal aficionados. On this re-issue, we also get the "Bastard Saints" 4-song EP, plus a remastering of both (for an added "oomph" to the sound).

If you are new to Sinister, "Hate" is a great starting point. Many consider it to be the band's best album, myself included. It's as if they built upon all the strengths of the previous two albums and unleashed something even more potent and aggressive with "Hate." Two highpoints of "Hate" are: 1) Mike's quintessential death metal growl, and 2) Bart's unique riffs. Parts of this album are quite "atmospheric" which is not too common for death metal, as exemplified by the 7-minute opening track "Awaiting the Absu." If ever there were such a thing as "epic death metal," that song is IT! Simultaneously mesmerizing and repulsive. Melodic and dissonant. Just incredible.

All in all, there is not a weak track on either "Hate" or "Bastard Saints." Both are brilliantly conceived and executed by one of death metal's most overlooked and underrated bands."
