Synopsis
Amazon.com This reissue is culled from three mid-1950s Vanguard Jazz Showcase albums by pianist Sir Charles Thompson, produced by the legendary John Hammond. Coleman Hawkins, jazz music's first great tenor saxophone soloist, is featured on only one of the sessions, but his commanding presence dominates the album, especially on the ballads "It's the Talk of the Town" and "Under the Sweetheart Tree." Thompson, whose light touch and easy swing recall a less reserved Count Basie, leads a mainstream sextet and a drummerless trio on the other sessions. While hardly essential listening, For the Ears is an enjoyable reminder of how Swing Era jazz veterans held their own in the brave new world of bebop. --Rick Mitchell Similar CDs

CD ReviewsWonderful compilation of mid-'50s tracks MG Nagy | 07/21/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "This is a 12 track compilation of material from three albums: Sir Charles Thompson Sextet - 1954 (tracks 5, 10-12). Sir Charles Thompson and His Band, Featuring Coleman Hawkins - 1955 (tracks 1-4, 12. yes, 12 is listed twice, as per the CD booklet). Sir Charles Thompson Trio- 1956 (tracks 6-9). The track listing is: 1) Fore! 2) Ready For Freddie 3) It's The Talk Of The Town 4) Dynaflow 5) Oh Joe! 6) Best By Test 7) Love For Sale 8) Stompin' At The Savoy 9) Hey There 10) For The Ears 11) Bop This 12) Under The Sweetheart Tree (tt: 63 min. 57 sec.) I'm only familiar with one other Sir Charles Thompson disc, Takin' Off (Delmark), with tracks that pre-date For The Ears by about ten years. Pete Brown (Alto Sax) and Joe Newman (Trumpet) join Sir Charles again to play on these 50's tracks. Once again, it's a great combination. The band swings more on these tracks, making this disc a much better (and more accessable) introduction to Sir Charles than the Delmark material. The track sequencing on this disc is great, with the trio material in the middle, providing a nice break while showcasing Sir Charles' piano playing. On the technical side, a very good remastering job. Everything was bumped to 24 bit using Pro Tools and Apogee DA8000s. There is a little hiss, and a bit of distortion in places, due to the original recording levels and mic placement. The only complaint I have is with the booklet. Much is devoted to John Hammond (who produced these sessions) and Coleman Hawkins, with very little being said about Sir Charles. Sir Charles shows up big were it really counts: in the music." Superb compilation of a neglected pianist's swinging bands. T. Maddison | London | 02/07/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "Until this album I only knew Sir Charles from his playing on the legendary (as here Hammond produced) Buck Clayton 'Hucklebuck'/'Robbins Nest' jam session, where his ultra-restrained Basie styled playing adds much to the massive soundscape of those great recordings, and from a couple of early Charlie Parker sessions ('The Street Beat'?). The tracks here are obviously shorter and snappier, with some great jumping arrangements and wonderful solos (check out Coleman Hawkins on 'Under The Sweetheart Tree'), with the fine quality of the original recordings all too evident, as is discussed at some length in the sleeve notes. Perhaps the standout track is the trio version of 'Love For Sale', one of the best versions I've ever heard, sly, poignant and deeply grooved with some beautiful touches by Thompson. A compilation that definitely makes you want to track down the complete original albums!"
