"Slap Happy Humphrey's self-titled album is truly one of the most unique albums in my collection. Mineko from Japanese psychadelic act Angel'in Heavy Syrup performs along with several other noted Japanese avant garde artists in this bizarre cover album of songs written by Morita Doji, a Japanese pop-folk singer of the 70s and 80s.
This is not really a tribute album to Doji but the band does use the songs of Doji as a template for their extremely unconventional sound. The best way to describe this is psychadelic, shoegazing acoustic folk drenched in shattering, sludgy reverberation and white noise. Mineko's beautiful, angelic vocals lull listeners in with her enchanting innocence and faint acoustic pop melodies only to be rewarded by ear-splitting, dense feedback.
I am sorry for the poor review but I have never heard anything like this with the exception of a few Japanese acid folk artists, so it is rather hard to describe. Either way I recommend you pick this up because it is truly a beautiful, one-of-a-kind album that is both sentimental and groundbreaking."
