CD Reviews
Same old, same old

"I get the trick now. R&B is reissued and retreaded in different forms ("Greatest Hits, Definitive Collections", etc.), when the same songs rear themselves in every edition. And when a new song (or songs) are included, its usually some lame track no one wants (or it would have been released with an original issue album). This collection follows form. R&B music does not seem to warrant the release of music in original album form, or if so, in such small release that they become collector's items. When, when, when is Slave going to release "Just a Touch of Love" in CD form? Its almost becoming laughable how labels get away with retreading the same music, with just enough variation that most people wind up with multiple CD that are, for the most part, the same music, with a new track included here or there. Some essential R&B albums have not been touched because we continue to bite on the same hook with each release. If this review seems wanting as far as addressing this particular "CD", its because you've heard all this music on various CD's before (and have probably already collected all the AVAILABLE essential tracks)."

"Huge Slave Fan. in there first inception Slave had wicked Grooves&got on the map big time with the Funk all out Classic "Slide". that jam is still wicked Crazy to this day. but the era of Steve Arrington is what really took Slave to the next level. Steve Arrington is One of the Most Slept on Musical talents Ever. dude was a Beast on Drums, tight on Bass&Had Vocal Runs that were out of this world. quite a few cats have tired, but none of them can nail those runs&holding down the notes like Steve Arrington did back in the day. Watching you, Snap Shot, wait for me are monsters. his solo joints "Weak at the Knees", you meet my approval" just keep your head Bopping. Arrington was one of the few cats who get Michael Jackson's Ad libs&yet add his own flavor on top of that with Jazz Runs Vocally."
I TOTALLY agree with TMACK79...

"...I was listening to my "STELLAR FUNK - The Best of Slave" compilation, when it dawned on me that "Party Lites" wasn't included!
Again, TMACK79 hit the head on the nail - how do record company's expect to continue to sell CDs when they continue to offer out watered down "Best Of..." and "Definitive Collection" compilations, and then adding radio versions of everything?! Hopefully the buying public will eventually wise up. What a joke...
Record Companies - open up those musical libraries/archives and give the people what they want! Maybe that'll help curb dishonest people from attempting to acquire the music they want illegally from P2P and Russian music sites (I personally don't believe in them, but the original Napster back in the day DID have better offerings than the record companies)!
Amazon - you guys are big enough to resolve this issue with the record company's AND give Apple a run for their money selling music digitally!
Or perhaps buydotcom would be interested in resolving this....?"

"It's too bad that this band from Dayton, Ohio was not appreciated as much as they should have been. Perhaps there name may have prevented sales but if we all took a hard look at what they created. TAKE A HARD LOOK & LISTEN! Mark Adams is one of the BEST bass players I have ever heard and Slave's music was STOMPIN! Oh sure "Slide" was the classic but with there hypnotic beat, songs such as "Snapshot", "Just A Touch Of Love" & "Stellar Fungk" were even better. Slave's albums got better as they went along and when SHOWTIME was released, I was a huge fan. "Funken Town" was the last song on SHOWTIME but I wished that this album never ended. "Funkentown" should have been like a 10 minute long masterpiece!!! I felt sad when the group started the breakaway when some core members left. Their album after SHOWTIME titled VISIONs OF THE LITE surely suffered. It seemed that the whole project was disorganized and sales fell off. They rebounded nicely with BADD ENUFF but NU PLATEAU was not good at all. It seemed that the trademark SLAVE sound was gone. I thought that this was the end for SLAVE. In 1987 while in a record store, I just happened to see MAKE BELIEVE on sale and at first I baulked at the idea that things had really changed. But I snapped it up and took it home waiting to be disappointed. I was shell shocked!!! This SLAVE album was completely FUNKED UP!! From "Juicy-O on this was the SLAVE album I had waited so long for. The group paired down to Mark Adams, Danny Webster, and Floyd Miller (the original core) had matured and so did the funk. But because of there record label (Ichiban), The NEW slave albums including REBIRTH were not widely available especially in small cities and towns. 1990 was the last that I heard from SLAVE. But this band was totally overlooked and because of this they commercially underachieved. MASTERS OF FUNK is a sure fire bet for those out there wanting to hear some COLD HARD FUNK!!! This GROOVIN cd is a fine collection of Slave's earlier songs though they could have added some tracks from BAD ENUFF. A GREAT ALBUM by a GREAT BAND!!!!"

"Double CD from the baddest band ever !!!!! I have to agree with TMACK79 though...I'm a huge fan of Slave also and I wonder WHEN ARE WE GONNA GET "JUST A TOUCH OF LOVE" IN CD VERSION? I own every cd that's available by them (the one's that are worth buying...any true fan knows which ones they are) and I bought this collection just so I could get "Foxy Lady (Funky Lady)" from the Just A Touch Of Love album. I rate it a 5 because it's Slave but let's re-issue the original albums "Just A Touch Of Love" and "Bad Enuff" so the true fans can listen to tracks like "SHINE" before we die. But on the real, if you are a fan of Slave and don't already own their stuff on CD, this is the one to get. Two disc cover both "Stellar Fungk - The Best of Slave" and "Party Lights - More of the Best". Save a little money and enjoy the FUNGK !"
