CD ReviewsFinger-Pickin' Good Chris Sheffler | Philadelphia, PA United States | 02/02/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "I first heard slo-mo from a coworker--whom refused to let me copy the CD because she righteously insists on supporting local Philly artists. I confess to be a bit jaded in my musical tastes, and straight rock-n-roll usually leaves me a bit cold. Perhaps that is why I enjoyed the slo-mo disc so much--it's not straight rock-n-roll. It is an interesting mix of witty lyrics, some extremely competent dobro (think lapsteel) diddlin', and some fat beats laid down by Beale Dabbs. The prevalent sound is a snappy, accessible, updated bluegrass-on-speed kind of thing. With his twangy vibe, Slo-mo actually tricks me into thinking that I kinda like folky/country music. Slo-mo's sound really defies categorization in to one genre--it's twangy and folky, but it is also highly electric and there's even some scratching courtesy of DJ Mr. Cisum on the title track. If you get the chance to see Slo-Mo play live, you will also be treated to the ritual of the miraculous ice cream suit--a pure white 3-piece in which Slo-Mo always plays. Although some liken it to Tom Wolfe, really it's only a bolo tie away from Col. Sanders."
