CD Reviews

Be very aware

"This is simply a packaging of three products from the back-catalogue in a cheap, dull cardboard box. The CDs are not re-remastered; that is, these are the original CD issues from back in the 80s/turn-of-the-decade. That is to say: Butchered original cover art, no liner notes, and thin sound. The music is truly great, but please don't purchase this thinking you're going to receive newly-remastered and -packaged editions."
Root Rock Remains Un-Remastered

"Sly Stone and his band created innovative soul, blues, rock, electronic, jazz, beat, hip-hop and new age music a decade ahead of it's time. I have listened to his music since high school. I was in seventh grade when I first dug that irresistable fuzz-bass line on "Dance To The Music". It was fun to grow up listening to "Hot Fun In The Summertime", or to dream on a girl while listening to "Thank You Falletinme...". So I have purchased this box set, and have found that after all these years, this seminal music remains UN-REMASTERED by Epic/Sony. WHY? Is there a contractual problem between Sly and the label? IF so, why not resolve it in the interest of carrying this wonderous music on for future generations who are growing up accustomed to 20-bit digital sound? The fans are the losers here, both new and old. I also think it is false advertising to announce this generous box set of three of Sly's best albums without mentioning that the sound quality of the music is still the same frustrating, muddy, lifeless analog/LP mix that has been out there for years. Again, I must ask: WHY?"

"Actually not a box set, but 3 classic albums for the price of one. - - SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE is one of the most important bands in the history of rock, funk and soul. - - They stopped touring ages ago, but at one time, they were so strong one critic likened their appearences to a religious rival with Sly at the charismatic healm of the cult. Sly vanished(alive, but a recluse), he got funkier into the '70s, Larry Graham of course went on to funk up the world with Graham Central Station, and last I heard he was touring with Prince (sign o' the times, ey ?) As for Sly, its unclear whether the drugs or changing times put him out of business, however, Sly's positive message music, his ability to blend dance music, rock and soul, and his catchy, tightly produced tunes are timeless... Its not Woodstock or bell bottom culture... its timeless music crossing boundries of race and style and this boxed set carries you through all of it, from his early messages of love and living together, through his more cynical message music about babies making babies and urban blight in the '70. - - Sly was and is a cultural icon... and I think to me (and countless other) his music has a meaning... and hell, FUNKY. Countless artists have been influenced by his music, and many of these tunes, if you're like me, are the soundtrack of a lifetime... so if you don't have these three CDs, something is definitely missing from your collection !"
