Synopsis

Smashmouth have their gig down. They're a ska-metal combo and they look it, breathe it, and sound it--from the requisite short hair to the thumping bass to the mostly silly lyrics. They've got something more, though--namely a pop sensibility that really clicks, if only here and there. The brilliant single "Walking on the Sun," with its arch wordplay, great production and undeniable hooks, will probably land them on the ever-growing pile of 1990's one-hit wonders, but there's some other good stuff to investigate on Fush Yu Mang; chiefly the insightful props of "The Fonz" and the angry "Nervous in the Alley." You can forget the lame closing cover of War's "Why Can't We Be FriENDs" though. --Michael Ruby

CD Reviews

One of the most underrated CD's ever...
Kristin Harman | San Diego, CA | 05/17/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This Cd, when it was first released, was carried entirely by "Walkin' on the Sun" which doomed Smash Mouth to forever sing songs the same way, thinking that it would help their image. That's rather unfortunate because the other songs on this CD such as "Heave-Ho", "Padrino", and my personal favorite "Nervous in the Alley" have an entirely different sound and feel. This CD deserves a second glance so instead of just scoffing at it because it's smash mouth, listen to the samples. This is the only CD from Smash Mouth with and Explicit Lyrics sticker, because after this they went soft. This is good music, check it out."

"I have originally bought All star smash hits, for only a couple songs, so then i checked out their debut. But really i wished Smash Mouths music style stayed this way, because i don't really enjoy SKA, but Punk is one of my favourite genres.

Flo- 5/5 Cool Song! Good way to start!

Beer Goggles 5/5 Catchy, yet a good song!

Walkin On the Sun- 5/5 Good Song!

Lets Rock- 4/5 Sometime slow, and other times fast, but gets the same after a while.

Heave-ho- 5/5 Seems long, but its very catchy.

The Fonz- 5/5 Don't know what the title is suppose to mean, but the slow melody, and tone of voice makes a good song!

Pet Names- 5/5 Hilarious Lyrics, and has a good melody!

Padrino- 3/5 Sort of Weird sounding... Not the best.

Nervous In the Alley- 5/5 One of my favourites! Should have been on All Star Smash Hits!

Disconnect The dots- 4/5 It was pretty good, but not my favourite.

Push- 5/5 My favourite song! Very melodic, and catchy!

Why can't we be friends? - 3/5 Okay cover, but its long and gets annoying..."
