CD ReviewsScandinavia Attacks Again! Michael | San Diego, California USA | 07/06/2001 (4 out of 5 stars) "Smile, an ultra-happy Danish dance group, explode with Euro-trash enthusiasm on their debut album (also called "Smile"). Their sound is influenced by all great Danes before them, such as Daze, Toy Box and Aqua. The album itself is a good exploration into the upper realms of catchy Euro-pop;however, its inconsistency is surprising and frustrating. The standout track is the well-known (courtesy of the Dance Dance Revolution video game) BUTTERFLY(#1). This Japanese-influenced, Samurai-loving song is a perfect example of the finest Euro-dance coming out of Scandanavian sound factories. This has truly become a classic song for Smile. Other excellent picks from this album are COCONUT(#2), BOYS(#7), MR.WONDERFUL(#8) and COMME CI COMME CA(#10). Each of those tracks embody the true Euro-sound of the late-nineties. But for each of those songs, there are a bunch of duds. Take SWEET SENORITA(#3)for example. This is a completely throw-away track that is undeserving of this album. I honestly don't know how this group is so inconsistent. What I am pleased about is the fact that Smile obviously chose to forgo the obligitory ballad. Almost every dance album I have heard tosses a pointless ballad on the track line-up, in an attempt to show the artists' "range". If I was interested in range ability, I would not listen to Euro-dance! I do recommend this album for fans of the true Northern European pop scene, as it completely fits the bill...." High energy pop Leanna Nolan | San Diego, Cali | 05/28/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "I have this CD, and all their others. If you like the music from DDR (Dance Dance Revolution), you will love this album (and their others). The music has A LOT of energy and is great to dance or work-out to." Some excellent tracks, but it's far from being my favourite the eurodance lover | Grenoble (France) | 08/01/2006 (3 out of 5 stars) "This album is not that bad, really, but it's not great like some others.
First let me start with the track "Butterfly" - everyone loves it because it's in DDR. Personally I HATE it, for that reason. I don't like when bubble gum stuff is included in japanese stuff (here DDR) because then the music is thrown into the "anime soundtrack" category, and I DON'T like anime AT ALL. Same goes for "Boys". Now, on the good part : "Comme Ci Comme Ca" is awesome. It's undoubtly my favourite track of the album ! So much energy and that chorus is soooooo catchy !! "Coconut", "Mr. Wonderful", "Tic Toc" and "Knock Knock" are also very good, in the same style. The other 3 remaining, are just OK for me. Though, I agree with one reviewer about one thing : there is no ballad, and that's a good point ! But the fact that only half of the tracks are very good tracks and there are 2 that I absolutely can't stand makes this gets only 3 stars from me. I recommend it for those who enjoyed Butterfly, I know they will love the album. As for real bubble gum lovers, check out Crispy's "The Game", Caramell's "Gott Och Blandat" and "Supergott", Daze's "Super Heroes", Bambee's "Fairytales", for example. There are more, but I won't write the whole list..." |
