Synopsis

Product Description
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles live is a rare item in any format. Here, for the first time ever, are two of the group's classic live albums on two CDs.
And what a difference three years makes.
The first disc in this limited edition live collection set takes place in 1969 at Detroit's Roostertail, as close as Motown would ever come to having its own club. The association goes back to the mid-Sixties, when the company sponsored a series of gigs there called Motown Mondays; Smokey and Company were frequent visitors to the Roostertail, and felt comfortable within its walls. The album, first issued late in the year, features some of their most sophisticated harmonies and a live band that takes no prisoners. (Be awed by the onstage bass line in "I Second That Emotion.")
The second disc of the set was recorded in a very different type of setting: Washington DC's Carter Barron Amphitheatre, a 3750-seat outdoor venue in Rock Creek Park. It was also setting the stage for Robinson's departure from the band he'd co-founded 15 years earlier. At the end of the latter disc's set, Smokey introduces Billy Griffin as the new lead singer for the Miracles.
Because it was their last time onstage as a unit, Smokey's then-wife Claudette Robinson - who had left the road in the mid-Sixties - rejoined the group, and her impact is perceptible. Her innocent yet flirty female voice added an intriguing thread that will always set the Miracles off from their colleagues and peers.
Only four songs overlap the two sets; how could they perform a concert without "Going To A Go Go" and "Ooo Baby Baby"? But the concert surprises, such as Burt Bacharach/Hal David's "Walk On By," and their hit cover of Dion's hit "Abraham, Martin And John," demonstrate the breadth of the band's musical talent. The Miracles also reach back, singing requests of old chestnuts like "Bad Girl."

MIRACLES LIVE ....IT'S ABOUT TIME !

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Miracles are my favorite group of all time .. a feeling agreed upon by more people than you may think ...TJ LUBINSKY ,the creator & executive producer of all the famous PBS music specials ,(DOO WOP 50,RED,WHITE,AND ROCK,R&B 40,ETC},has said publicly several times on his specials that the MIRACLES are his favorite group of all time as well (ALL of them , not just SMOKEY}. MOTOWN RECORDS HAS , unfortunately, for their fans, been very slow about releasing their entire album catalog from the '60's and early '70's on CD... great albums such as FLYING HIGH TOGETHER, ONE DOZEN ROSES,the unreleased "THE MIRACLES SING MODERN"(the release of which would be very timely now since so many current artists ,SMOKEY INCLUDED,are releasing albums of standards today},WHAT LOVE... HAS JOINED TOGETHER, (Once on CD, but now out of print),I'LL TRY SOMETHING NEW,and others, still have yet to see the light of day on CD.How happy I was , therefore, to see the 1st time ever release of 2 of their classic albums : LIVE! and "1957-1972"(their final live performance} on their new "LIVE COLLECTION". There are many great performances here ...Smokey, Bobby, Ronnie ,& Pete doing DIONNE WARWICK'S "WALK ON BY", the full vocal range of their harmonies on Dion's "ABRAHAM ,MARTIN,AND JOHN,"OOO BABY BABY,and"GOT TO BE THERE" and Original member Marv Tarplin's great guitar work on "THE TRACKS OF MY TEARS", SATISFACTION,and MICKEY'S MONKEY" and the capper :being joined on stage by another orginal member: Smokey's then wife (& Bobby's cousin }, CLAUDETTE ROGERS ROBINSON on their classic "BAD GIRL" .THE MIRACLES' performances and showmanship are as always FLAWLESS AND DYNAMIC and they live up to their early "60's nickname " THE SHOWSTOPPERS" .If there could be said to be a gripe with this collection, it would be that MOTOWN should have also included the groups' 1st live album from 1962: RECORDED LIVE: THE MIRACLES ON STAGE {also never before available on CD}. That would have put all 3 of their live albums in one collection - and would have shown an interesting evolution of the group's sound over that 10 year period...but other than that.. a FANTASTIC COLLECTION..5 STARS!!"
