CD ReviewsEssential. afekete | 05/13/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "Aggressive, arrogant, depressive and downright beautiful, Snatches of Pink's "STAG" is a breakthrough, a totally unique approach that reclaims and updates the Keith Richards style of rock for another generation. One can hear traces of Johnny Thunders, "Exiles"-era Stones, "Tonight's The Night"-era Neil Young, and those downer Aerosmith LPs from the late 70s (the ones recorded as the band was breaking up). What makes SOP's approach so distinctive is that they take these influences, amp them way up and then slow everything way, way down, playing very loose and dirty, so you can hear the complex harmonic churn of the instruments. The production is top-notch, which makes STAG one of those rare records that truly blossoms at high volume. Excellent replay value: this CD stands up to many repeated listens. It's a mystery to me why this band has toiled in obscurity in Chapel Hill NC for the last decade; with work of this caliber, they should be stars.
If you love loud, grungy, messy imaginative rock and roll, then don't hesitate to get this glorious mess of a record." |
